Nady Tearing It Up While Fitting In

After a sluggish start in which he hit 1-11, Xavier Nady has been on a tear, going 9 for his last 15 with 6 runs, 9 RBIs, 3 doubles and 2 homers. He was the difference yesterday in helping the Yanks come back and best the Angels, 14-9, earning a big split after two tough losses. He’s also been eagerly welcomed by his Yankee teammates, something that usually surprises incoming players but not so much fans who read such recurring testaments to good teamwork, one of which the The Star-Ledger‘s Dan Graziano relays below:

Upon his arrival last weekend, he admits, he was trying “to hit a five-run home run with nobody on base.” But it didn’t take long for him to look around and realize how many people were working to make him feel comfortable. During batting practice, he would get a tip from Alex Rodriguez about his swing. In the dugout, Derek Jeter would take a seat and fill him in on an American League pitcher he didn’t know anything about. After a couple of days, Nady realized that the beautiful thing about being traded to the Yankees in late July is that you’re welcome to be a small part of a machine in which all of the parts are dedicated to working together. In that way, there’s a lot less pressure than you’d think.

“Today wasn’t so much me as the guys in front of me having good at-bats and getting on base so I was in a position to get the clutch hit,” Nady said. “I look at the other guys in this lineup, and all I want to do is just watch and listen to those guys, and that’s going to make me a better player.”

Nice to also read that Nady’s public-relations skills fit well into the Yankees’ own diplomacy. Continuing to rip it at a clip of 10-26 would be great but a lot to ask, but I’d be thrilled with something close. Tremendous steal for the Yanks picking up Nady and Marte.
