Jays 2 Yankees 1: Woe Are They

The offense was yet again shut down, this time by a dominant AJ Burnett, and in the process wasted an excellent start from Darrell Rasner–6 2/3 IP, 3 hits, 1 run earned, 1 walk and 3 K’s on 86 pitches/54 strikes–in a 2-1 loss. Rasner made only one mistake, hanging a 3-2 slider to Lind, who belted it out to deep right.  Worse, Johnny Damon found a way to drop not one but two fly balls in center, the second causing the winning run to score with two outs in the bottom of the eighth–laughably scored a double.

Burnett fanned 13 Yankees, including A-Rod and Giambi all six times he saw the two.  Giambi fanned four times in all.  The first of several wasted chances came in the first when Abreu’s double to left scored Damon after JD’s lead-off walk.  A-Rod was caught looking and Giambi whiffed.  Abreu’s lead-off double in the fourth went wasted.  Pudge singled and stole second with two outs in the fifth, but JD’s whiff left him on.  Jeter and Nady led off the sixth and seventh, respectively, with singles that saw no runner advance past first in either inning.  A-Rod singled to lead off the ninth but, on the bloop over Overbay at first, he was thrown out trying for second.  In all, the Yankees were 0-12 with runners on and 0-6 with RISP or, as I’ve been mulling, the GRISP reference–Gratuitous Runners in Scoring Position reference.  With the 2008 Yankees, it’s not a matter of whether or not RISP will be mentioned; it’s just how bad they were with RISP and, for that matter, just runners on.  Tonight, awful on both fronts–advancing and also scoring runners.

Eleven behind Tampa in the East that is for all intents and purposes between Tampa and Boston, behind whom the Yankees are now 6 1/2 for the Wild Card.  The team looks to be just going through the motions, and the offense is squarely reason number one to blame for this year’s travails by continually wasting good pitching.  Thankfully years of being a Bills fan can help me weather this spate of unrequited expectations.
