Studs Terkel, R.I.P. 1912-2008

Studs Terkel, the greatest oral historian of our times, truly a historian of, for, and by the people, author of various works such as Hard Times, Race, The Great Divide, Chicago, The Good War, American Dreams, Working, and others, radio host, dissident, cigar aficionado, actor in “Eight Men Out,” and all-around mensch died yesterday at the grand old age of 96.  Terkel was a great man who became synonymous with a great city, Chicago, who fought for worthy political and human rights causes, who changed the way we think about history, and who was a distant uncle to nearly everyone who watched or listened to him.

I’m sure there is a well-stocked humidor and many eager talkers waiting for Studs in Heaven.  You will be missed, Mister Terkel.
