Game 8: Yanks @ Rays, 4/14/09

As per Pete Abraham, below are the lineups with historical stats for the starters, Burnett and Garza:

Gardner CF
Jeter SS
Teixeira 1B
Swisher LF
Posada DH
Cano 2B
Nady RF
Pena 3B
Molina C

Pitching tonight: RHP A.J. Burnett (1-0, 3.38)

RAYS (4-3)
Upton CF
Crawford LF
Longoria 3B
Pena 1B
Burrell DH
Navarro C
Zobrist RF
Iwamura 2B
Bartlett SS

Pitching tonight: RHP Matt Garza (1-0, 1.29)

A.J.Burnett vs. the Tampa Bay hitters.

Matt Garza vs. the New York hitters.

In the thankful for small favors department, Pena starts over Ransom (2-24).  JD is out with the flu, so Swish takes LF, and is now the eighth-inning man before Mariano.  Molina is catching for Jorge, who is the DH.  Maybe Molina will regularly catch Burnett; maybe the Yanks want Jorge to get a semi-regular day off; most likely it’s an indication that the Yanks don’t want the speedy Rays running roughshod over them all night.

Good to see Teixeira back at first and batting third, with Swish clean-up.  Good also to see Brett the Jet, for whom I urge patience, back leading off.

Clearly, Burnett needs to be able to go 6-7 good innings, especially after last night’s debacle.  According to Dave Eiland, Wang’s pre-game bullpen was great, but he failed to carry it or his form to the mound.  He and Girardi insist that Wang is not injured, so the presumption then is that he’s all messed up, body and mind.  Jeter is 1 for his last 20 and definitely needs to pick it up.  In fact, the whole team needs a lift but as importantly, some positive consistency.  Granted, it’s only seven games in, but their performances have been all over the place thus far.

I’ll be in and out for much of the game, so this is less an in-gamer–though feel free to come by and chinwag if you so desire–and more a historical record of who’s playing tonight.  Let’s Go, Yankees!
