Game 95: A’s @ Yankees, 7/23/09

Below, as per Pete Abraham, is the Yanks’ starting lineup, with the A’s to follow.  HInske is in against the righty Mazzaro, a locally born player.  The Yanks are just rolling right now, having won six straight after the break to take a two-game lead in the East on Boston.  Chicago and Mark Buehrle provided a big assist to the Yanks, with Buehrle throwing a perfect game this afternoon–only the 16th in baseball history–against Tampa in a 5-0 win.  Yet whether or not the Yanks will get a chance to continue that win streak tonight is very much in question, for it is raining in The Bronx now, with heavier precipitation to come for what looks like a few more hours, according to the doppler radar at  Hopefully it will move out in a few hours, but the question will then become whether or not the field will be dry enough to play.  We’ll see, but my gut tells me not to hold one’s breath for baseball anytime soon tonight.

If they play, and I hope they do, enjoy the game, everyone.

It looks like the rain is abating, and there may be baseball sometime tonight.  However, it may be a late night, especially for East Coast fans, to stay up for this.

The start time will now be 9:40.  I like that they’re playing baseball tonight because 1.) I kind of like Yankees baseball, 2.) the Yanks are on a streak and should play every day they can while they’re hot, and 3.) presuming there are no other rain outs over the next few days, this keeps Burnett, Sabathia, and Joba on track to pitch in Tampa which, unless they added waterfalls to the indoor rinky-dink putt-putt park, should not experience any rain outs.

  1. it looks like it isn’t going to happen. if they play a DH on saturday do you think if CC goes tomorrow they might have him go on 3 days rest in tampa?

  2. 9:40 start. It’s funny, sometimes you never know how teams will react after delays. A couple of years ago, it was like Mussina was Dustin Hoffman’s “Rain Man” where any change in routine would throw him off. A couple of rain delays in the season and Mussina couldn’t adjust. It sounds funny for a veteran like him who won 270 but once off his routine, he was way off. You never know sometimes.

  3. “rinky-dink putt-putt park,”

That is funny. Maybe the Yanks should play the park like Adam Sandler played his last shot in “Happy Gilmore.”
