Game 112: Jays @ Yankees, 8/10/09

Below, as per Pete Abraham, are the lineups.  The Yanks look to make it eight straight wins and are playing great baseball.  JD sits, with Hairston taking left, while Posada is the DH and Molina is catching.  Tonight’s lineup is also clearly an effort to stack right-handed bats against the lefty Rzepczynski.  While I prefer Hinske’s power, Hairston is the better choice to play more regularly because of his superior defense and, tonight, his righty bat.  We’ll see how this pans out, with capable lefty bats in Matsui, JD, and Hinske sitting.  Abraham rightly expresses concern about a possible letdown, just as Mike did in a comment on the previous post.  I concur, but think that the letdown today, after an intense sweep of Boston, will just as likely come from weak pitching as it would any offensive lapse.  If Mitre is decent to good, it would go a long way to helping the Yanks win, for while they won four against Boston, the Red Sox’s good pitching limited the Yanks to 12 runs over the fnal three games.  That is, the Yanks weren’t exactly blistering the ball offensively immediately before the Jays series, so the bats may be there tonight.  Hopefully Hughes is available after his nine pitches in the Boston series.  I imagine that Aceves and Bruney may well be available, too.  Enjoy the game, everyone.

  1. No one seems around tonight.

Good and Bad first inning Mitre got 2 k’s then gave up 2 hits looks like a matter of time before he gives up runs. Jeets started with a HR to lead off the Swish, Tex got singles then Alex DPs nothing came of that. Yanks 1-0 thru 1st

  2. I really should not say ths but I hope Mitre sucks but hope we win obviously. If Mitre has a good game I can see Girardi papering over the cracks saying hes good now the 5st starter. To me he isnt very good pretty bad against an average offence. I know we don’t need a very good 5th starter but there is better then Mitre if not I hope Mitre proves me wrong.

  3. Mitre has been pleasantly surprising today, Nick, fanning five through two. But yes, he’s not been good thus far. I think Girardi’s faith in Mitre is thus far to dress a pig up as something else. They need Mitre to be decent, and he might eventually be. I don’t think he’ll see much action come October regardless. In his starts, I’d settle for three runs in 5-6 six innings.

  4. E5 keeps the inning alive. I like that the Yanks scored early.

  5. I also like that they’re making Rzepczynski work.

  6. It was abit of a stupid silly thing to say “I hope he sucks” I really don’t but you know what I mean like you say dress a pig up as something else or as I say you can put lipstick of a pig to make it look nice end of the day still a pig.

  7. Mitre looking good so far

  8. spoke to soon another 4 runs given up.

    Come on Mitre

  9. Back to back homers Yanks tie it up 4-4

  10. Huge, immediate response from Cano and Hairston, whom I like a lot.

  11. Yeah Im a fan of Hairston he can do it all other then catch.

  12. 5-4 now Jays

  13. Mitre = Ponson, a run an inning.

  14. Sterling: Mitre “kinda pitched pretty well.” My ass, kinda.

  15. I like and hate sterling he calls great games but its the its gone its gone its………………….cought.

  16. That happened a couple times in the first two games of the Boston sweep. I like Sterling, but he’s getting worse with his missed calls, and some screwed up names and numbers lately.

  17. That sucked with Boston winning aswell(only the 8th but they will).
