Pettite, Offense Roll Rangers 9-2

I got my wish from Lefty, who went seven strong last night and got plenty of run support to beat Texas 9-2.  Jorge drilled a three-run homer in the second, Hairston added a solo shot in the fourth, and the team exploded for five in the seventh.  Good defense and timely ground balls produced four DPs.

Jorge’s homer was his 17th with 63 RBI, batting .277.  Hairston’s homer was his 10th, and he was all over the bases with two walks and two runs.  Matsui continues to scald the ball, going 2-4 with a run, batting .271.  He also had a tough, 12-pitch walk after Cano’s lead-off double to end Holland’s start and help propel the big inning.  Jeter was 1-4 with 2 RBI (59 on the year) from his seventh-inning single, batting .333.  Teixeira drove in two with his own single in the big seventh, giving him 95 this year and a .285 average.  Cano was 2-4 with his 36th double, batting .316.  Swish’s 26th double to drive in Melky in the seventh gave him his 67th RBI.  A-Rod was 1-3 with a walk, batting an improved .267.  The offense has been much improved, scoring 57 runs in the last six games.

But as is often the case, such a game and result begins with pitching.  After allowing 39 runs in the previous four games, the Yanks got a shutdown performance from Pettite, who allowed just five hits and three walks for the two runs earned, fanning seven on 103 pitches/61 strikes.  He got out of a bases-loaded jam in the first, when A-Rod atoned for an error that started the rally by beginning a 5-4-3 DP.  After a lead-off walk to Andrus to start the third, Jeter’s excellent stop to his right started a 6-4-3 DP, with Pettite fanning Young afterward.  His K of Young on a nasty slider to end the fifth clipped the Texas rally at just a run.  Another 5-4-3 DP in the sixth wiped out Hamilton’s lead-off single, and Pettite used that tough slider to fan Andrus, who he had walked twice, to end the seventh and his stint before the Yanks won going away.

Burnett (10-7, 4.08 ERA) faces Nippert (4-2, 3.95 ERA) in the rubber match this afternoon.  Keep winning series, guys.
