Yanks Outslug Orioles 9-6, Win Fifth Straight

The Yanks are winning ’em every which way, beating Baltimore 9-6 with five homers despite Burnett’s awful start.  Jorge drilled two, a solo shot in the third to put the Yanks up 3-1, and a two-run blast in the fifth to make it 5-3.  Jorge has 19 this year.  Cano cranked his 22nd in the top of the second to give the Yanks a 2-1 lead.  Although Burnett coughed up the 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth by allowing a three-run bomb to Scott over the right field foul pole, giving Baltimore a 6-5 lead, A-Rod tied it in the top of the sixth with an RBI single.  Swish then cranked his fourth homer in Baltimore this year, compared to three in The Bronx, to make it 8-6 Yanks, and Hinske blasted one out to left center to go back-to-back, 9-6 Yanks.  Good thing for A.J. for he simply missed Jorge’s spot on the homers to Pie and Scott, and Mora’s double.

The bullpen was just as great as Burnett was awful, going 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and no walks.  Marte continues to look good, retiring Markakis and Reimold.  Robertson fanned two before allowing a double to Roberts and getting pulled for Coke with one out in the eighth.  But Coke clipped the threat, getting Pie and Fiorentino to end the inning.  Mariano entered the game with an 0.90 ERA in 38 save opportunities this season, and that dropped with a scoreless ninth, his 38th save this year and 520th of his incomparable career.

Cano was 3-4 with his 40th double, 22nd homer, 2 runs and 2 RBI, giving him 74 this year and a robust .320 average.  He is killing the ball lately, going 10 for his last 22 with four doubles and two homers.  Jorge was 2-4 with his 19th homer, 3 runs, and 3 RBI, batting .280 with 66 RBI.  Melky was 2-4 with a walk and a run, batting .273.  Melky is 7 for his last 16.  Swish was 1-5 with his 23rd homer and 2 RBI, 72 this year.  And to think that the Yanks dealt Wilson Betemit for Swish, who has done a great job this year, especially considering that it was Nady and not Swish who was the everyday right fielder at the beginning of the year.  Thanks, Chicago.  Hinske was 1-4 with his 6th homer as a Yankee in just 22 games.  I don’t think there is any debate about whether or not he or an extra pitcher should be on the post-season roster.  Don’t tell me that he can’t be more valuable in some role, especially pinch-hitting or matched up against a pitcher he hits well, than a 13th arm, especially since the Yanks won’t use more than a four-man rotation come the seven-game series.  Hinske has earned a spot come October.  A-Rod got his 71st RBI, JD had a single, and JD’s single was his 2,712th career hit, just nine from tying and ten from passing the great Lou Gehrig.  The bottom of the lineup did yeoman’s work tonight, going 9-22 with 8 runs and 8 RBI.  There is simply no let-up in the Yanks’ lineup right now.

The Yanks have won five straight, have won the series against Baltimore, are a season-high 36 games above .500, and have reduced the magic number to clinch the East to 25.  They maintain a 6 1/2 game lead on Boston in the East, and a 4 1/2 game lead over the Angels for home field pending their game against Seattle tonight (5 1/2 if they lose).  With 30 games to play, the Yanks are right where they want to be–well ahead, playing good baseball, getting solid productivity throughout the lineup, and beating those whom they should.

Get the sweep tomorrow, guys.  Enjoy it, Yankees fans.

[Edit: Enjoy it even more, Yankees fans. Seattle did the Yanks a big favor by beating the Superfluous Acronyms 2-1.  As a result, New York is 5 1/2 games ahead of the Angels for home field with 30 to play.  Huge.]

  1. Crazy game but the only thing that counts is that they won. If it matters at all, the Orioles have been formally eliminated from the AL East as of last night.

If the Yankees go straight .500 (15-15) the rest of the way they will finish the season with 99 wins. The Los Angeles Devils of Orange County Under the Command of the Rally Monkey would have to go 21-10 to catch them.

Message to the Yankees: Show the AL NO MERCY. There is no reason to feel safe until Monday September 28th, the last week of the season when we won’t see the Sox or Devils until the post season.

  2. If the Yanks stay focused, Wiz, home field will be theirs. Right now, they’re poised to set the playoff table just as they want it. At this rate, I wouldn’t be surprised if they won 103-104 games. We’ll see, but they’re just rolling and winning games in myriad ways. That is, they’re getting what they need on any given day–strong pitching, lots of hitting, you name it.

Keep shifting gears, and no letting up.
