Game 143: Orioles @ Yankees, 9/12/09–Yanks Lose 7-3

Glad I shut this one off after six, with the Yanks losing 6-1 and looking listless. They eventually lost 7-3. Burnett had an awful second, collapsing as he frequently has lately by leaving pitches up, and watching them sail into the seats. He surrendered a grand slam to Brian Roberts that blew the game open and, with the offense shut down, pretty much ended it. Burnett has been bad in protracted streaks, and he is smack in the middle of one right now–at just the wrong time headed into October baseball. With Molina catching A.J.’s recent starts, I wonder where the Posada bashers are claiming he calls an inferior game, and that his not being on the same page with Burnett has cost the pitcher. It appears Burnett’s problems run well beyond Posada, who seems to work with Sabathia, Pettite, and others just fine.

Below, as per Pete Abraham, are today’s lineup. JD continues to sit with a stiff back. Shelley the Marauder makes his triumphant return to the Yanks’ starting lineup as today’s DH Hairston plays left, Brett the Jet plays center, and after a long, rainy night, Jorge gets the day off with Posada catching the truculent Burnett. The Yanks look to return to 41 games above .500, and reduce the magic number to clinch the East, which currently stands at 14. Enjoy the game, everyone.
